How to Clean a Keyword List Before Using SEO Tools

Keyword lists often come from several places: Search Console exports, brainstorming sessions, competitor pages, autocomplete tools, and client notes. Combining those sources can create duplicates and inconsistent formatting.

  2. Click Trim Whitespace.
  3. Click Use, then click lowercase.
  4. Click Use, then click Remove Empty Lines.
  5. Click Use, then click Remove Duplicates.
  6. Click Use, then click Sort A to Z.

Why this matters

Most SEO tools charge by query volume, row count, or project size. Cleaning the list first helps you avoid wasting checks on repeated keywords. It also makes clustering and manual review faster because similar terms appear near each other after sorting.
